The reauthorized measure is expected to provide an estimated $240 million in new sales taxes for Caltrain service and projects.
These funds are critical to the Caltrain Modernization Program, which includes the electrification of the railroad, new electric vehicles and an advanced signaling system.
An electrified railroad is more energy efficient and less expensive to operate. And, because electric trains can stop and start more quickly, more stops could be added to the schedule, increasing service at all stations.
In addition, the new measure provides some funds for operating expenses.
