PARATRANSIT
Many San Mateo County residents have disabilities that
prevent them from riding SamTrans' fixed-route buses or
from getting to a bus stop. For them, paratransit is the
answer.
In 1988, Measure A established a $25 million Paratransit
Trust Fund that provides interest income to support
paratransit services. The fund has been used to buy new
vehicles, expand the travel training program and improve
service delivery.
San Mateo County paratransit services are provided by
Redi-Wheels and RediCoast, both services of the San Mateo
County Transit District. Small buses, mini-vans and sedans are
used to take eligible customers to medical appointments, to
work, to shop or to run errands.
Although the fare for patrons is only $2.50 per one-way trip, the
average cost to the district for each ride is nearly $32. This
disparity illustrates the importance of the Paratransit Trust Fund.
In its first year of operation in 1977, Redi-Wheels certified 300
people to receive paratransit service. Today, 5,600 county
residents are active riders and nearly 150 new applicants
are certified every month.
