INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
From the Executive Director
Eighteen years ago, San Mateo County voters looked into the future,
saw gridlock and voted to do something about it. In 1988, the Measure
A half-cent sales tax passed by a convincing 61.7 percent margin.
That affirmative vote made possible a long-term investment in the
transportation system of our county and the Bay region.
Measure A has provided local residents with the ability to leverage
local dollars with state and federal funds to achieve big things. At the
end of 2008, when the current Measure A expires, it is estimated that
$1.1 billion in local tax dollars will have brought in an additional
$1.2 billion in state and federal dollars — for a $2.3 billion investment
in transportation infrastructure.
When voters were asked to renew Measure A in November 2004,
they resoundingly endorsed what had been done to improve transit
and relieve traffic congestion and embraced a mobile future, voting
their approval by a phenomenal 75.8 percent margin and extending
its tenure through 2033.
The San Mateo County Transportation Authority, which was
established to administer the funds, is simultaneously wrapping
up the first program while gearing up for the new one.
The 2004 measure will take the TA into some new programs and
projects, including local community shuttle busses, ferry service in
South San Francisco and Redwood City and a major infusion of
dollars for bicycle projects. For the first time, much-needed operating
funds can be channeled into SamTrans, Caltrain and BART service.
As the strategic plan is developed for this next phase, the TA will
ensure that the new Measure A is invested as wisely as the one
that charted our course into the 21st century.
