The new Marsh Road Interchange helped alleviate congestion at the U.S. 101 Interchange with Marsh Road and improve access to the Dumbarton Bridge. Before construction began in 1996, it was estimated that 20,000 drivers a day used the two-lane bridge over 101. During rush hour traffic backed up on the freeway, which contributed to a number of accidents in the short merge lanes.

The existing bridge over 101 was replaced with a wider overpass with four vehicle lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks. The freeway ramps and approaches were reconfigured. Metering lights were installed at all the ramps on Marsh Road and traffic signals in the area were interconnected.
