5th Avenue (Redwood City)

Grade Separation

Work began in March 1994 to separate the railroad tracks from Fifth Avenue in unincorporated San Mateo County. The road was lowered 25 feet below the track, which remained at the existing level. The project improved safety and traffic conditions on Fifth Avenue between El Camino Real and Middlefield Road and improved visibility on a curving section of track.

A key benefit of the project is the separate pedestrian and vehicular bridges parallel to the train tracks, in addition to the elimination of an at-grade crossing. The project included extensive beautification features, including stone work on retaining walls, landscaping and old-fashioned street lights.

A gala summertime ceremony marked the completion of this $18 million project in 1997, which included a new four-lane underpass below three bridges.
