A large crowd turned out for a Saturday morning ground-breaking
in March 1995 for a project that separated Millbrae Avenue from
the railroad tracks by means of a highway bridge.
The overpass is an 1,180-foot-long structure that connects Rollins
Road and El Camino Real. A 420-foot-long bridge arches over the
Caltrain tracks between Rollins Road and El Camino Real, eliminating
the potential for collisions between trains and vehicles at the
busy crossing.
The Millbrae Avenue grade separation was completed in February
1997 enhancing the safety and reliability of Caltrain with the
elimination of the grade crossing. Traffic now flows smoother,
as well.
The project cost was shared by the state, the City of Millbrae
and the Transportation Authority. The project was completed under
budget.
