The fact that Caltrain's San Francisco terminal is more than a
mile from the city's financial district was perceived as a roadblock
to the commuter rail achieving its true potential.
In 1994, the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board designated
a site at Beale and Market streets as its preferred choice for
a relocated terminal, with the Transbay Terminal as an alternative.
The JPB also awarded a $2 million contract for a Draft Environmental
Impact Statement/Draft Environmental Impact Report for the project.
The transportation authority provided matching funds, enabling
the pivotal study to go forward.
Due to lack of support from the City of San Francisco, the JPB
has discontinued work on the extension of the Caltrain system
into downtown San Francisco.
