Caltrain Equipment Maintenance

and Operations Facility

Construction of the Caltrain Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility will result in a new centralized maintenance facility for Caltrain’s locomotives and passenger cars. Caltrain’s existing rail maintenance facilities have outlived their useful and efficient capabilities. Dilapidated and outdated equipment present significant challenges to employees. The new facility will accommodate various activities such as daily inspections, scheduled maintenance, running repairs, train washing and storage. The new facility will consolidate Caltrain’s existing maintenance facilities and provide the capacity to complete additional types of maintenance and improve the efficiency and quality of Caltrain maintenance operations.

Construction is scheduled to start fall 2004 and take nearly two years to complete. The total project cost is $139.4 million. The majority will be paid for with federal money (74%), with the balance picked up by the state (10%), Measure A funds (10%) and other local funds (6%).

Project Elements

  • An approximate 17’ high community wall will be constructed along the western side of the site to minimize noise and light disturbance to the community
  • New automated indoor train washer
  • New railroad shop, including drop table and overhead crane, will allow better and safer access for critical repairs to cars and locomotives
  • Three-story operations building will house employees and warehousing functions in support of the maintenance facilities

Oversight Committee Involvement

The Caltrain Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility Monitoring Committee is an advisory committee established by the San Jose City Council in cooperation with Caltrain. The committee conducts quarterly public meetings to provide ongoing communication with the community regarding the design, implementation and operations of the maintenance facility.

In December 2001, Caltrain and the City of San Jose, in conjunction with the Oversight Committee, adopted a list of "Shared Objectives" to ensure a joint, community involved process to deal with specific concerns presented by area residents regarding project construction and operations.

Communication Efforts

Caltrain’s public outreach staff is committed to keeping the community informed and addressing the needs of residents and businesses through community meetings, neighborhood notifications, newsletters, and Web site updates (www.Caltrain.com).

Residents have access to a toll-free, 24-hour staffed hotline for questions regarding the Caltrain Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility construction. Through the hotline, concerns will be logged and responded to within 72 hours. To contact the project hotline, dial toll-free 1.877.433.0300.
