Since 1988, when San Mateo County voters passed Measure A by a 61.7 percent margin, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority has worked to improve transit and relieve traffic congestion.

There is no more convincing proof of the TA’s success than the decision by the voters in 2004 to extend the measure until 2033. The reauthorization passed by a phenomenal 75.8 percent margin.

Measure A has given local residents the ability to leverage local dollars with state and federal funds. At the end of 2008, when the current measure expires, it is estimated that $1.1 billion in local tax dollars will have generated an additional $1.2 billion in state and federal dollars.

Currently, the TA is wrapping up its first program while gearing up for the new one.

The 2004 measure includes some new programs and projects, including local community shuttle buses, ferry service in South San Francisco and Redwood City, and a major infusion of dollars for bicycle projects. For the first time, much-needed operating funds can be channeled into SamTrans, Caltrain and BART service.
