Starting with the first southbound train Sunday morning, Caltrain began operating on the new San Bruno Grade Separation. Trains were moved from the temporary train tracks or “shoofly” to the new elevated structure over the Memorial Day weekend.
The grade separation, which elevates the train tracks over three streets in downtown San Bruno, is an important safety improvement for the area. The structure keeps vehicle traffic off the tracks and makes it extremely difficult for pedestrians to access the railroad right of way.
In addition to accommodating vehicle traffic on San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues, the project includes three pedestrian underpasses – one in the vicinity of Sylvan Avenue, one at the new station and another between Euclid Avenue and Walnut Street.
In the upcoming weeks, the shoofly and the temporary crossings and signals will be demolished and removed. During this time, there will be periodic street closures. Drivers and pedestrians will be directed to nearby detours. Passengers will continue to use at the temporary train station at 297 Huntington Avenue until the project is finished at the end of the year. The project includes a new station on the elevated platform between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues.
